Why every digital missionary needs uh recovery. And so, Andy, it's all yours, my friend. >> Thanks, Jeff. I appreciate it. Hey, uh this has been an incredible conference.

I just want to say thanks first of all to everybody that has joined uh even amidst amidst all of the technical issues and DNS resolvers and you know all of the other things.

Uh we also want to say thank you to Hubalo for actually working on this in a very timely manner. uh they have been incredible to really uh answer our email my our my hurried texts and emails and WhatsApp messages and so they got some things figured out and so uh we know also

that there might have been a little blip at the at the front and some of your friends may have been missing some of those that uh are were attended or were supposed to be attending you might have missed this as well.

So we're going to be putting all these resources out for free at a later time. Uh we're kicking around how to actually get that and present that.

But uh stay tuned to your email inboxes. But that's not why I'm here. I'm not here to clean up any of that. Um, we're here to talk about recovery.

And this entire conference has been full of people that are way smarter than me, uh, in this vein, in this venue. And we're going to bring somebody that's also way smarter than me onto the screen in just a few minutes, uh, by a man by the name of Jose Santiago.

But before we get there, um, people hear recovery and they think, "Oh, I got to be struggling with something. I have to have the big hairy ugly in my life.

I need to recover from that." And that's the only thing I can recover from, you know, for myself and my quick story, uh, is that I grew up in a in a in a church-going household, but never knew the the the name of never really knew Jesus as my savior.

Went to college, was a little bit young. I went on like a full ride scholarship to Florida State, go Noles. Uh, went there and thought I had the world by the my, you know, the the world by uh, the ears.

And went there and found um uh went through a couple of little sessions of heartache and found this incredible thing called cocaine and uh really fell into a cycle of addiction.

And uh it lasted for many many years and Jesus found me, conked me on the head and put me in touch with uh not only himself but a really really great group of people in a program called Celebrate Recovery.

Um, it started with AA, Alcoholics Anonymous, moved to NA, Narcotics Anonymous, and then moved into Celebrate Recovery. And through Celebrate Recovery, I really found a Jesus centered way of dealing with my addiction.

And I can honestly say I'm a recovering addict. It's just how it is. I'm always going to be recovering. And people hear a recovering addict, they go, "Oh man, you must have had some stories.

That's why you have tattoos." You know, all those other things. It's like, no, no, hold on. I had a struggle, but you have a struggle as well.

And we all have a struggle that we are dealing with. You know, I've been a pastor for 16 years. And uh a lot of times I hear uh from people that grew up in the church.

And they'll say things to me like, "Well, my story isn't that remarkable because I've just always known Jesus as my savior." And it's like, "Hold on, hold on, hold on.

Your story matters. Your story of salvation matters. Your walk with Jesus matters. But your story of recovery in that same vein also matters because like it or not, we all have something that we're trying to recover from.

Whether that's little T trauma, whether that's big T trauma, whether that's just simply being addicted to our phones, whether that is some big hairy ugly nasty abuse that happened to us.

And the thing that I find interesting is that we are digital missionaries. We are stepping into a digital uh really minefield. There is such a such a wealth of addiction, such a wealth of people that need to be uh really things that need to be addressed that we're stepping into.

And what I often find, and I'm sure you you can feel this as well, the the field that you feel most passionate about, the thing that you really want to see Jesus come about in, the the the the area that you really want to step in is probably the thing that you were

struggling with as well. And so when we talk about recovery here at the Church Digital, it's not just, "Hey, I want to help you get off of off of whatever drug it is." Like, yes, we do, but you as a missionary, we want to help you.

We we want to show you that this isn't about addiction. This is about aligning with Jesus. This is about uh telling your story in a way that captivates and and recovering from the things, the slings and the arrows that the enemy has been throwing at you and and really uh finding shelter in

the rescue and the rest of God. And it, you know, we have filters that hide truth. We have platforms that are storing things away.

And and as a a as as recovery sort of uh um uh uh workers in this field, as we step into these things, we want to lead not with that fake veneer, but we want to lead with authenticity.

The only way we can do that is to really uh find out the things that we need to tune up and and sort of uh move and shape and and twist the knobs that we need to.

And so, um, this this this entire kind of series, this series, this entire conference has been all about, uh, what the church digital is really going to be stepping into.

And and and Jeff's going to come back and talk about that in in just a little bit. But before we get there, I wanted I wanted to bring on one of our, uh, really awesome team members.

I met this guy, Jose Santiago, just a few maybe months ago. Jose, how long you been like hanging out with us weirdos? Couple months now.

>> Yeah. I was stalking you guys for a few more months than that, but then I finally started uh hanging out probably Yeah, like maybe two two three months.

>> Yeah, two three months. And so, Jose, before we talk about recovery and all that, like give me your story. Give me like the elevator pitch like like I want I want to hear about recovery, but I want to hear like where you came from, man.

I want to hear your I want to hear a little bit of your story. >> Sure. So, um, you know, I'm I'm a a former lawyer, uh, 18 years in practicing attorney and then went into ministry and, um, even though I surrendered to to God's calling, I realized I was taking some of

my, um, bad habits or some of my, uh, you know, traumas with me into this space. Um, and what that looked like, what it looks like for me and I and for many uh missionaries as I speak to those in ministry is that it's very easy to conflate our work with God with

our time with God. >> Right? And um when you are that type A personality always wants to succeed, what what I took away uh especially when I got into care, I'm also a workplace chaplain.

One of the reasons I do that is because I realize that when excellence in ministry, when it comes at the expense of intimacy with God, then it's no longer excellence.

And I'd argue it's not even ministry anymore. >> Right? Because if the work that we do for God, if it replaces life with him, then the work isn't even really uh about him.

Mhm. >> Um, and what I mean by that is, uh, in my case, uh, my what I need to recover from is is self-esteem issues and, um, and imposter syndrome.

>> And the way that could present itself for someone in ministry is that it masks itself as humility, right? In that you now start burning the candle at both ends for God.

And you you humility is biblical. And so you you attach to that, but what it ends up doing is is putting you in a place where you don't say no to things, where you burn out, where you feel that you need to somehow earn.

Even though we we preach about that grace is something that we can't earn, it's a gift. Deep down that's that imposter syndrome and that desire to please God, it can again mask itself as biblical humility and it really is potentially a self-esteem or um you know, an imposter syndrome thing.

And so that's something that I see a lot of people in this space, especially as digital missionaries. Many of us are almost alone.

And what I mean by that is we're digital. A lot of us are working remote. We're doing this remotely. And unless we connect with others intentionally and proactively, we could find ourselves in a space that's just isolated.

Right? We heard that word a lot today. And that's where the enemy wants us, isolated. And that's where he attacks us in those weak spaces.

That's awesome. And you know, I as a kind of recovering addict, I find that I often shove my addictive behaviors into my work.

I have, I'm always running two or three different jobs and a side hustle and I'm always trying to do things and I'm taking time in the morning. You know, I wake up at 5:00 a.m. and then I don't go to bed until like 11 or 12 because I'm trying to hang out. You know, I'm trying to do all these things and we do it in the name of God, right? And so again, there's that humility there, but really it's the self-esteem where I want people to look at me and I want them to say, "Oh, that Andy, like he really helped," instead of saying, "Oh, that Jesus," that was revealed through whatever Andy was doing in my room or in my session. Like that's where the thing was.

And so it's cool you're recognizing that. I think something else that I want to touch on here is that when people think of recovery, again, you phrased it so beautifully. I'm going to read something that you wrote and I want you to just respond to this. We were asking in one of our private like WhatsApp or text groups about TCD recovery, kind of this initiative that we're going to be stepping into. And Jeff was just asking us like, "Hey, describe it. Like, what is recovery?" And Jose wrote this and it blew me away, which is why I wanted to bring him in here.

He said, "My preliminary two cents. Most folks think of recovery and our minds go to the extremes. Drugs, alcohol, sex, pornography. While these are all true, there are so many small gods, idols, lowercase G, small gods and idols that we prioritize over God, uppercase big, heavenly father, Yahweh God, and our relationship with him." What if we asked folks to select or identify somehow the areas that they felt they need to be addressed or recovered? Then we can introduce our groups and kind of step into that. And I want to pause there because I want to ask you like, how do you tell somebody that the thing that they are suffering from might not be the extremes, but it might be the normal day-to-day self-esteem issues, the things that, you know, we as missionaries are trying to do are Messiah complexes. How do you go about telling that to people in a way that is that will bring them on your journey?

Right.

Well, I think it fundamentally it's rephrasing the question from, do I need recovery to, what do I need to recover? Right? Because it's not a, it's not an if, right? It's a what. There's always something in our lives that we're either idolizing, all right? Or we are masking with something else as I mentioned earlier. And I think once we accept that it's not an if, that there is something that we need to recover or address, then it's, and that means it's all inclusive, right? It's all of us. And so that vulnerability place, that's what really, especially in care, that's what we want to do when we're caring for someone, whether it's a chaplain or as a pastor you're shepherding someone. You want to preach or teach or correct or console from with your scars, not the wounds, right? But from the scars, meaning I've been there too. And I think when you have a place of vulnerability where you can empathize with the person and they see you as like, "Wow, this person that I see as an authority figure or someone that I thought had it all figured out, they're struggling with this too." But they're still aligning themselves with the word, with God, and still being obedient. I think that's really important.

Yeah. And Stacy just said it, it's not an if, it's a what. And I think that is, that's what we're trying to do with TCD Recovery. We're trying to show not the if, but the what. And so that's why we're really pleased that Jose is bringing his expertise as a chaplain, also as a digital missionary, kind of like us, all of us crazy people. Because that's what we are. If we're on the internet and you're here at this conference, sorry, you're one of the crazies, and God loves you for that. And so a lot of the times it's not the if, it's the what. It's the thing that is entrapping us.

And so I'm going to bring Jeff back on and I want Jeff to kind of lead us through kind of what we're doing here with TCD recovery. Jeff, hello. There he is right there. Look at us. It's the three of us, just three dudes just hanging out on a stream. That's what we're doing.

Love it. We're talking about imposter syndrome in chat and I just happened to come on this stream and, you know, talking about recovery. I kind of feel like an imposter syndrome on this one because, you know, I'm in the midst of a recovery process myself right now and working through that, which kind of is really the impetus of all of this. Where through my recovery process, I kind of discovered that by being broken and vulnerable, I actually was a far more effective person for Christ rather than being a control freak and a domineering and a type A personality. Actually being like fragile, broken, and saying, "Okay, God, you do what you're going to do. I'm along for the ride." Dude, freaking like, took things off in an entirely new direction.

Which got me asking some of the questions, okay, who else needs to discover this? How else do we need to walk through this? And what do we organizationally need to do? And this is really the heart behind, you know, us rolling out the idea once again of TCD recovery.

Now we are kicking this off and it is 100% beta. If you know anything about the Church Digital, we're really good at building the plane while it's flying, or we think we're really good at building the plane while it's flying. We probably suck at it, but at least this is what we're doing again for this round. And so here's what I want to do.

I want to throw this up here. Help shape digital recovery for missionaries online. We are exploring the idea of doing it digitally. We are exploring the ideas of doing it virtually as well in the metaverse and in gaming, but we're looking for people right now to sign up for the beta and help us get started with that.

We're kicking leadership's going through it in 2025. Our beta groups are kicking off in 2026 and beyond. But it's my hope not just to see it happen inside the Church Digital, but to start to empower people through the Project Exodus training to start to do this within their ministry circles of influences or within their digital churches or virtual reality churches. And the idea of taking this into the metaverse, into gaming spaces, as addictive as those platforms are to themselves, and doing recovery and embracing people in that space in a unique way, not pushing them off like is so common in the US church with some of the stigmas, I forgive me, or just the established churches because of the stigmas, but instead welcoming them into that.

Yeah, like we want to set, and that's why I keep saying like it's a culture change. The established church, brick and mortar church has a culture problem centered around recovery. It's part of my story. It's part of many of our stories. And we need to help the church recover from that, which is what we want to do.

No, just I totally encourage everyone to take the leap of faith and join a group, get involved. Because what I will tell you is that this is going to allow you to be that much better of a missionary for Christ because it's not about what are we recovering from but who we're recovering for, right? And we're recovering for him and for the mission that he's given us.

Yeah. Love it. Andy, anything on your side?

No. Happy that we have very smart people on the team, Jose, Ian, and Stacy. They're going to absolutely kill this. And I am super, super, super looking forward to actually reaching into and learning all about recovery with our team, but more than that creating healthy digital missionaries because the burnout rate on pastors and missionaries is so incredibly high and that's because we don't know how to recover well. And so seeding this into the world is going to be great.

Yeah, it's good. We live in a sinful world. Getting damaged, getting burned, it's part of reality. The church has not learned how to reboot well. And so pastors do not know how to reboot well. Understanding that in recovering for that is going to be a major play in the future.

Crazy, right? Listen, this idea is going global and we're so excited about it. Uh and so lean in uh not only uh to being a digital missionary, not only to the communities, not only to all the resources and the accounts and the free things and the assessments, the digital discipleship.

Like there's so much we the church digital want to give for you. But um lean into the understanding that um working hard and killing yourself is not the is not God's answer uh for uh his kingdom.

Like coming from someone who used to work 80 to 90 hours a week um destroying myself. I used to joke that my the church that I worked for owned my soul and they wouldn't give it back until I died.

Um sadly that's not a joke. That actually was the joke I would tell. But even in the moment, I didn't think like it was joking.

I thought it was real. Like that's not God's way of of proving that he's Lord over all. That's not an effective way for the gospel to to spread over the ashes of your burned out carcass.

I I don't know all the languages. I worked it out with Simon Dirks. threw in a couple of my own. Korean's obviously not in in uh uh Egypt or Europe, but I kind of really just wanted to see what AI sounds like when it's doing Korean.

And and so we've got 10 different languages for the European Digital Missionary Conference. Set your alarms early if you're stateside. If you're international, we're doing it right up your alley.

We'll be doing four total between September and October. And in 2026, we're going to do a two-day conference. We're bringing everybody together, massive conference, lots of breakouts, lots of uh different tracks to be able to hear different topics happening simultaneously, wrestling about what it would even look like in virtual reality and getting back into the metaverse like we did in the spring. And uh he he replied back uh spiritual warfare is real even digitally. And and ladies and gentlemen, spiritual warfare is real even digitally. You will know that in in the ministry lives that you're experiencing.

You will know that when you see us in the church digital succeeding and struggling and and wrestling through everything uh that that we do.

Um you know, it's in in my ministry career, I I will say this that I've I've often been frustrated when pastors would blame technical issues on on spiritual warfare.

Sometimes, dude, your your sound guy just forgot to push up the mic fader. That's not spiritual warfare. That's guy's probably distracted by something he shouldn't be.

Tell him to get off his phone. Okay. When 75% of the internet can't access this and it's not us, it's not Hollo. It's because somebody didn't refresh their cache who's managing a global network of DNS servers, domain name servers.

Yeah, spiritual warfare is real, people. Uh, and so, thank you for your patience and bearing with us. Here's the reality. Some of you, it's funny.

I even saw Melanie made a comment. She's like, "Oh, I missed the first whatever." Um, we're going to figure out how to how to live stream this publicly.

I I don't want to put a date on it. There's some other calendaring scheduling things and we've got uh, you know, other conferences that are are happening like and so this kind of like this this truck's running full steam ahead downhill and it's like, well, we got to stop to to to show it again and and to do like a a replay so that people can actually see it. I am so like my spirit was upset when all this hit because I knew that there were people out there and I still believe that there are people out there that need to hear what we talked about and and and maybe I I it's funny I said this at some point. I really believe God wants us to give this conference away for free publicly.

Like I I honestly I think breaking the domain name servers was probably God's way of saying let's Jeff open the doors on this and and let everybody see what's going on.

And so um we will communicate. I promise you if you register for the conference you'll get an email. Um, if you are are in fam, I promise you'll get a notification, but we are going to publish this, broadcast this, we will get this in in a public forum uh soon, asterisk and uh we'll let you know so that a you can go through the entire conference if you missed it, but b having seen it, who else do you want to get to see this?

Who can join you a to help hold you accountable maybe for your personal recovery. Who can you invite to join you in helping with other recovery?

Or maybe there's somebody that needs this themselves and you can invite them in and you can be a part of their uh recovery, their accountability.

There's so many ways this can work, but we as an organization were open-handed in helping you do that. Andy's telling me, Jeff, for the love of God, shut up already.

You know when people are like you know Jeff Reed is the church digital and and that like you have no idea how many people are involved in this thing to make this thing happen on a on a regular basis.

I am I'm a mere spectator of what God is doing through the church digital in the lives uh of because of the the work of the people that are uh around me.

Never surround yourself with people who have nothing to say. Like surround yourself with people who push you and then listen to them and watch what God does through that.

So good. Hey Heavenly Father God, thank you for today. Um, uh, thank you for struggling servers and thank you for the endurance and patience, the resilience of people to stay, uh, to stay connected and uh to try.

Thank you for those that were able to make the conference. Uh, God, we pray for those that are here. God, we pray for those that are not here, the people that need to uh maybe hear this or or see this or or learn this, apply this in their ministry career, uh, apply this in their personal lives. God, you know the hearts of many. You know the hearts of all. And so, um, maybe in the days to come, um, be a soft quiet voice in the ears of those here.

Um, focus proud us of the people we need to invite and involve in in this conference in this conversation in the days to come.
