Should Your Church Be Using Threads - July 2024 Update

In July 2023 Meta launched Threads. Threads is the latest Twitter/X “rival” that is primarily text-based and provides a way for people to engage unlike Meta’s other platforms, Facebook and Instagram.

Since it’s launch, Threads has experienced ups and downs in terms of user engagement. Initially, with Meta’s backing, it saw rapid growth. However, user activity fluctuated in the months following. Meta has continued to develop the platform, adding new features and working on integration with the broader “fediverse” of decentralized social networks.

Ever since Threads launched, the question many church social media managers have asked the question, “should we be using Threads to reach people for Christ?” Here are some things to consider as you process whether or not your church should be using Threads.

Questions to Ask

  1. Audience:

Are your congregation and target audience active on Threads?

  1. Content type:

Threads is primarily text-based. Does your church communicate well through short-form text content?

  1. Engagement:

Are the current engagement rates on Threads compared to other platforms your church uses good enough to invest time and resources into it?

  1. Capacity:

Do you have the capacity to manage another social media platform effectively?

  1. Community building:

Does Threads provide you an opportunity to build community and engage people?

Conclusion

While Threads is a new player on social media platforms, there are still possibilities for your church to use it. However, in order for you to be effective on the platform, you have to determine if it is right for you. Answer the questions above and find out!
