"Go" Instead of Asking People To "Come"

Over the years, Churches have asked people to "come" to their event or Church service. In many ways, Digital Church Leaders can fall into that trap as well. "Come" to my YouTube channel. "Come" to my Twitch channel. "Come" to my Digital Church service.  Today, Jason shares about flipping the mindset in our digital ministry efforts. Let's not invite people to "come" to our stuff. Let's "GO" to their stuff. Let's "GO" to their communities and encourage people for Christ. "GO" today.  Check out Jason's last videos about going as Digital Missionaries: https://youtube.com/shorts/WnSnUCnCVbo https://youtu.be/AxylTdpwGaQ   ACTION STEPS: What do you think? How to Maximize Your Sunday Service Throughout the Week

Every week, Churches spend countless hours on 1-2 hours of a Sunday morning. While it's very important to do that, that seems like a lot of hours spent on such a short period of time. What would be ideal is if you could take that Sunday content and supplemental content so that you can encourage people in and outside of your Church and outside beyond Sunday morning. To talk about this, Ben Stapley joins Tom to share why and how you can do that for our Church.   Subscribe: Apple Podcast | Android | Spotify | RSS ACTION STEPS: Share your thoughts! What Online Only Student Ministry Looks Like

Churches have been doing student ministry for decades. Over that time, what student ministry "looks like" has changed and evolved. After all, if you are still trying to do student ministry the same way as they were back in the 1960s, you probably wouldn't be as successful as you could be. Enter Taylor Terpstra. He is the Online Youth Lead at Sandals Church in California. He was hired in December 2020 to be, to my knowledge, the first ever Online ONLY Student Minister. That's right, he is trying to reach students online and lead them to Christ. How is he doing that and what is he doing? That is what we talk about today.  Subscribe: Apple Podcast | Android | Spotify | RSS    ACTION STEPS: Share your thoughts! Do you know people who are doing Online Only Student Ministry? Share your thoughts below or on social media.  Are you thinking about doing Online Only Student Ministry? How Strategy Directly Impacts Online Effectiveness

Strategy is so important in anything we do. Over the last 2 years a lot of online ministry has been throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks. After all, a lot of online ministry has started over the last 2 years. But ultimately, strategy needs to take precedent in order to be truly effective in online ministry. To talk to me about this is Sly King. Sly is a friend of mine who has been doing Online Ministry for a long time (long before COVID hit). Jake shares his insights on how to fully engage someone new to their Church Online and how your Church can do something similar.   Subscribe: Apple Podcast | Android | Spotify | RSS   ACTION STEPS: Share your thoughts! PODCAST 135: The New Mission Field - So What Exactly is Going on with Rey?

As a general rule, it’s tough being a Pastor. This COVID season has been tough on the church. As a result, a number of churches are shutting down… also concerning, a number of Pastors are resigning. And while burnout or deconstructing faith is relevant in the life of ministry in 2021, there are others that are reframing their calling. THECHURCH.DIGITAL’s own Rey De Armas is on a similar journey. Recently resigning from his full-time church staff position, Rey is not walking away from ministry… instead he is walking towards a greater mission field than he’s experienced in his church staff career. So join Jeff & Rey as we go into greater detail talking about what exactly Rey’s been doing these days. Which is Right – Church in Person or Church Online?

Hebrews 10:25 (KJV) says, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” The other day, someone asked me if a digital church was biblical. Then he quoted Hebrews 10:25 and stated that this verse shows that Christians are commanded to meet in person. This is an understandable question and statement. It is easy to translate scripture based on our experiences. Most of us have grown up witnessing the assembly of believers within the physical walls of the church. Which is right – gathering in person or gathering online? In John 4, Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well. The conversation is long but at one point, the woman asks this question: “So tell me this: Why do our fathers worship God here on this nearby mountain, but your people teach that Jerusalem is the place where we must worship. Which is right?” Jesus responded,  “Believe me, dear woman, the time has come when you will worship the Father neither on a mountain nor in Jerusalem, but in your heart…From here on, worshiping the Father will not be a matter of the right place but with the right heart. For God is Spirit, and he longs to have sincere worshipers who worship and adore him in the realm of the Spirit and in Truth” (John 4: 21-24). Jesus teaches us, it is not the place that matters. It is the heart of sincere worshipers the Father is after. So wherever you worship- in-person or online, do it with a sincere and surrendered heart. Hebrews 10:25This is not the time to pull away and neglect meeting together, as some have formed the habit of doing. In fact, we should come together even more frequently, eager to encourage and urge each other onward as we anticipate that day dawning.

As 2018 comes to a close, we look forward to the New Year. Let's make 2019 the year of Church Online, where we intentionally focus on expanding our circle of influence beyond the 20 miles surrounding our physical campuses. Here are nine blogs that can help you take intentional steps to grow your Church Online in 2019. NY Times Slams Internet Church, and They're Not Wrong Are You a Church Online? NY Times Slams Internet Church, and They're Not Wrong...

A couple days ago the New York Times published an opinion on the Internet Church movement. Simply titled, Internet Church isn't Really Church, writer Laura Turner examines popular movements of Church Online (including Life.church, Connexus Church, even Judah Smith's Churchome). It's an excellent article. If you're involved in ministry, especially online ministry, you'll want to check out the article. Believe it or not, I agree with a lot of what she says. Well, at least where Laura discusses her perception of what Internet Church is... today. People view Church Online as a replacement for physical church. "I'm lazy today. It's too much work to dress up in Sunday best... I'm going to sit here on my couch in my pajamas and watch Church Online." And while this may be the prevailing view of Church Online today, the church is capable of so much more. Yes, Church Online is misunderstood in it's infancy. But there's potential worth fighting for. Remember, Church Online isn't a virtual building. It will not replace the physical building. It is a virtual network to share the gospel. Want a Biblical perspective? Ironically right before the NY Times article I released an eBook: What Happens When Church Online Grows Up? The book addresses many of the questions and issues raised in the NYT article, but paints the picture of a viable online ministry model that forward thinking churches can use to not only reach, but disciple, people online. So, download the book and let the conversation begin! {{cta('64b6f700-7331-47f8-ad47-3cfa1a5b2e4d','justifyleft')}}Like the eBook? Want to talk more? Click the button.

NEW PODCAST: What could a Kids Church Online service look like?

I had the opportunity to be on another podcast this week, talking about a fun topic for me... What does it look like to do Church Online specifically for Kids? What started out of a interesting topic in a Facebook Group turned into the beginning of a conversation via podcast. My kids (currently 10 & 8) watch the same content over, and over, and over again. If I watch one more episode of Dog with a Blog... Church, consider developing a Kids Ministry that reaches kids more than just that one hour on Sunday. Create and distribute content that kids can tap into all week, not just Sunday morning. What better opportunity to help kids grow deeper in their faith. Not to mention, when my daughter wakes up at 4am, I'd rather her grab her iPad and watch Church Online for Kids than watch Dog with a Blog... Check out the podcast on YM Sidekick, and thanks to Tom Pounder of Digital Bootcamp for hosting. Also, shout out to good friend Bobby Shaw from Austin Ridge to discuss the Online Ministry from Kids (and Students) perspective.

Marketing or Ministry? What's your Strategy Online?

In a tweet, Nona Jones and Pushpay clearly encapsulated an idea that I've been wrestling with for years. — Pushpay (@Pushpay) August 16, 2018 Pastors, utilizing social media is vital to your church's ministry. From a marketing perspective, connecting with the sphere of influence your church has in your town or city is vital. For most of you, this is not a surprise. Church, there's another untapped mission field we've yet to realize. Doing true "ministry" online is more than pushing people to your physical buildings for church services. In Matthew 28, Jesus didn't set up a model of ministry for "come and see", but "go and do." Online isn't just a powerful marketing tool inviting people to come and see, but a powerful ministry tool allowing us an opportunity to go to people and do discipleship. Church, is it possible to disciple someone online? What does your church's discipleship process look like in an Online space? What is Online Discipleship anyway?  {{cta('64b6f700-7331-47f8-ad47-3cfa1a5b2e4d','justifyright')}} We would love to help your church wrestle with these questions. Click the button. Thanks Nona, for pushing the limits of online discipleship, and thank you Pushpay for striving for innovation within the church.

Six Things Today's Church Online Doesn't Understand, and the One Thing It Must

Online Church isn't a replacement of the Physical Church. it is a very strong complement to the Physical Church (when done right). The 70 minute experience doesn’t work online I'm a video guy, literally spending 20 years of my life producing live video for churches. The attention span on YouTube is 3-5 minutes. Same with Facebook. Instagram is less than a minute, or 10 minutes with IGTV. TV shows are either 22 or 44 minutes, sans commercial breaks. Even Netflix, with all their original content cap their episodic material around an hour, and that's a highly produced with a high level of production tied in. If we're really interested in reaching the world, a 40+ minute message as part of a 70+ online experience isn't effective. Online, People connect to Community before Christ This is the exact opposite from our Physical Churches. People accept Christ in pews across America each week, but more often than not, effective evangelism online happens in small groups, not in the broadcast of the service online. Maybe as a result of the "fake news" movement, but there is a movement of distrust among people regHow do you build trust? Not by talking loudly, but by engaging, by listening to people online. Online Relationships are as impactful as Physical Relationships blah Church Online isn’t about your church’s ministry, but empowering individuals to do ministry blah Church Online isn’t about reaching the masses, but about reaching the individual blah   And now, for the one thing the church must understand...   Without some form of Online Discipleship, we're not operating as a Online Church. We're a spiritualized Hulu.

New Podcast: The Digital Mission Field

So last week I was on another podcast. Tom Pounder of Digital Bootcamp and YM Sidekick brought me on to talk about Church Online, and the digital mission field open to us today. Many churches do digital communications, but only a few are attacking the digital mission field by doing discipleship online (groups, Bible Studies, etc.) It was definitely a fun conversation highlighting some simple steps the church can do NOW to embrace discipling people online. Check out Tom's podcast, and if you haven't subscribed to it yet, jump on it. {{cta('64b6f700-7331-47f8-ad47-3cfa1a5b2e4d','justifyright')}}Questions on how Online Groups work? New Podcast: Exit Interview with an Online Pastor

Well, as a former Radio DJ I've always been told I had a face for Radio, I guess I can add Podcasting to the list. This past week I was interviewed by Jay Kranda, the Online Campus Pastor at Saddleback. He and I have developed a relationship over the years through building Church Online, and I'm proud to call him a friend. Jay texted me several weeks ago with an idea: Let's do an exit interview. Not necessarily like an HR thing. Since I'm less than a month into a new career since resigning as Online Campus Pastor at Christ Fellowship, this would be a great time for self-introspection. Simply put, he wants to know if, looking back, I would do anything different in how I led the Online ministry at Christ Fellowship. So, check it out. My exit interview on how, if I had to do it all over again, what I would change. Currently doing Online Ministry? Thinking about starting? Involved in ministry in general and want to hear a transparent perspective? Enjoy the podcast.  For more information, as well as a manuscript, check out Jay's website..

A NEW BRAND WORLD, OR WHY MY BUSINESS CARDS ARE AWESOME

Okay, it's getting real. I am happy to announce the brand launch of THECHURCH.DIGITAL - all of this is coming together quickly. If you see me in person, ask to see my business cards. They're incredible. Logo design was by Luis Mora, who worked quickly and efficiently to get this stuff done. I highly recommend him for photography or graphic/branding. For more information on Luis, check out 35mmMora.com. So, we've got a brand and a website. Next up? I've enjoyed catching up with some churches here in Miami over the past week, and tomorrow I'm flying out to my old stomping grounds (Austin, TX and Dallas, TX) to meet with some incredible people, and plan/pray through some future developments. If all this works, it's a God thing. If it doesn't work, it's still a God thing. Amazing the life perspective that comes when you realize that. God, it's a new world. Guide these steps and make this of you, not of me.

ENGAGING ONLINE, OR THAT TIME THE BIBLE GAVE THE CHURCH A SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY

I've been reading through James lately, and had quite the revelation. Almost 2,000 years before Facebook became a household name, James provides us an excellent social media strategy. Check this out. My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. - James 1:19 Church, be quick to listen on Social Media. Social media and digital communications is more than a way to just post an event online. Let's engage people online, meaning, let's give them an opportunity to speak, to share. And in the process of engaging them online, let's listen to them! Pull your audience into the conversation. Church, let's be slow to speak. It's very easy to create noise, overworking your social media and digital communications channels to the extent that you're just making noise. Don't just make noise with your channels. Be intentional with your words, your post, your message. God deserves more than just noise. Church, let's be slow to become angry. It's rare to see churches or organizations explode on social media, but on the individual level it's much more common. Let's guard our words and show the love of Christ, digitally. God, thank you for this insight from almost 2,000 years ago. Give us the patience to guard our words and to make them count.

THE VERTICAL LINE, OR THE DAY GOD SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE

I cried. All because of a vertical line. I heard a pastor preaching recently about why we should not fear. Having heard messages like this before, I shrugged it off. Been there, done that. Then he quoted a Scripture verse that I’ve heard at least a million times, causing me to get further disconnected... Proverbs 3:5-6Trust in the Lord with all your heartLean not on your own understandingIn all your ways acknowledge HimAnd He shall direct your path. Then he drew a line... a vertical line... Evidently the stuff on the left hand side, that’s my job. If I don’t want to fear, I need to 1) TRUST GOD, 2) DON’T LEAN on my own capacities, and 3) ACKNOWLEDGE GOD in all things.  If I do these three things, according to Proverbs 3:5-6, God will direct my path. What a humbling concept. The line brought a much deeper understanding, even practical application, to a passage I’ve read hundreds of times. You see, I trust God, at least I think I do. I acknowledge God in every chance I get. But as a confessed closet control freak, “Lean not on your own understanding” is a slap in the face. My understanding doesn’t scratch the surface of God’s. Why should I try to control a situation when He is by far better equipped to handle the situation? Yet strangely I seem to think I know better than He does when I do things in my own power instead of being dependent upon Him. So, God, I hear you. Use me. Humble me. Break me. Life’s far more rewarding when we’re leaning on His understanding than our own. I do not know where this path goes, but I know the one who owns it. In Him will I trust.
